And so, the people of Galatia understood exactly what Paul was talking about. He specifies the works of the flesh, which must be watched against and mortified, and the fruits of the Spirit, which must be brought forth and cherished, and shows of what importance it is that they be so, ver 19-24. Heretical division; this might be described as crystallized dissension. So all of these things fall under the category of works of the flesh, but the "fruit of the Spirit," fruit is singular. But immediately after this it is added, "In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. But if I have a whole page of gold stars but yet there's one little point over here where I blew it and I can't put a gold star, then I'm unrighteous. having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? You see, it isn't a once-in-forever kind of a thing. I began to think it through and I thought, "Yes, it is a work of the flesh, because usually a person gets into heresy to attract attention to himself." "But the fruit of the Spirit". So here it is said that God was pleased to reveal His Son in him, that he might preach the good news of Him among the heathen. They are ideas that have been planted in your mind by men. Because you have been born of the Spirit, you can see it, you can understand it; it's as plain as can be. So "cursed is the man that continues not in the whole law to do that which is written therein" ( Galatians 3:10 ). Impurity; the word that Paul uses (akatharsia, G167 is interesting. That it is our duty and interest in this struggle to side with the better part, to side with our convictions against our corruptions and with our graces against our lusts.
